Circular economy

Back to A Circular Economy

In a world troubled by climate change, plastic pollution, water contamination, and deforestation, it's increasingly important for all of us to live more consciously. Many of these issues stem from how much waste we create. The average American produces 1,704 pounds of solid waste every year, which is why circular economy and zero waste solutions can have such a large impact.

From linear to circular. Our ancestors rarely bought a piece of clothing to wear a couple of times and throw away, or used single-use items for convenience. Every resource was treasured and used to its full capacity, and items were designed to last and be reused. That reuse is known as a circular economy.

Today we create more trash than ever, because the products we use are designed to be replaced. Single-use packaging, low-quality clothing, and electronics with a two-year lifespan are simply more profitable, and companies are incentivized to have you throw away and replace products quickly. That's a linear economy: it isn't concerned with a product's lifecycle, only with creating items to be used and disposed of. A circular economy keeps resources and products in a loop instead.

Switching to a production system where everything, including packaging, is meant to be reused is one of the great solutions to the trash crisis, and anyone can take part. Even one bottle meant to be reused can save hundreds of disposable bottles from the landfill. Supporting companies whose products are made to be reused tackles waste at a bigger level, rather than putting the responsibility on the consumer to find a way to reuse something that was never intended for it. That's exactly what we're trying to achieve, in both our packaging and our formulas.

Why refill your hair products? Solid shampoo bars are a great zero waste solution for some people, especially those with short, low-maintenance hair, but they aren't the only hair product people use, and there aren't many zero-waste styling options. If your hair needs more than shampoo, our complete line of refillable products is worth a try. Read more about how our refills work and take a look at the starter sets to see which products suit your hair.
