Zero Waste is Important for a Sustainable Planet
Share
We are all aware of the tons of trash in our oceans and landfills that are leaching toxic chemicals into our environment. The zero waste movement was born from people who do not want to be part of this problem.
In the strictest sense, zero waste is a mindset of producing no trash, either as a person or a business. The goal is to change the cycle of buying things that end up in landfill to buying or using things that produce no landfill or can be reused. As the Zero Waste International Alliance puts it, zero waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste, conserve and recover all resources, and neither burn nor bury them.
Zero waste proponents think about their purchases and how any leftover packaging or containers can be recycled, composted, or made into something else. Before even buying something, they tend to ask: does it come in plastic that cannot be recycled or reused? Does it come with a lot of extra packaging that is not necessary? How many times can I use it before I will need to replace it?
Our refill program is the heart and soul of being a zero waste company. With this program we eliminate a plastic or aluminum bottle from entering the trash cycle with each refill purchase. We also reuse shipping materials, create no extra packaging or marketing materials, and use recyclable bottles. You will not find branded boxes or filler, just boxes made from 100% post-consumer products and filler that is on its second use or more. Both can be reused by our customers.
A Simple Planet is constantly searching for more ways to improve. We are proud of the steps we have taken and would love for you to email us any ideas you have.
